Depression & Hopelessness

When everything feels heavy, God is closer than the heaviness.

Getting here might have taken everything you had today. That counts. Stay a moment.

01 The answer

What does the Bible say about depression and hopelessness?

The Bible does not shame the person who feels crushed. It is full of honest, exhausted prayers from people who told God they couldn’t go on, and God stayed near them anyway. Scripture’s answer to hopelessness is not to cheer up. It is the promise that God is closest to the brokenhearted, that His mercies start over every morning, and that this heaviness, real as it is, does not get to write the end of your story.

02 We know why you’re here

You’re so tired, and you’re not sure anyone gets it.

Maybe you’ve stopped telling people, because the words feel too heavy to say and you’re tired of pretending you’re fine. The numbness, the fog, the effort it takes just to do the basic things. None of that means your faith failed.

Some of the most faithful people in the Bible prayed from this exact place. You don’t have to feel strong right now to still be held.

Three verses for the heaviest days.

03 The Word
Psalm 34:18 · NLT
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
He does not wait at a distance for you to recover. He comes close.
Lamentations 3:22 to 23 · NLT
“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”
You do not have to make it to next week. Just to the next morning, where new mercy is already waiting.
Psalm 42:11 · NIV
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”
Even the writer of this had to talk to his own heavy heart. You are allowed to be honest and hopeful at the same time.
04 Speak these out loud
Even when I can’t feel God, He has not moved away from me.
This heaviness is real, and it is not the end of my story.
I don’t have to feel strong today to still be held.
A prayer for you

God, I’m worn down and some days I don’t know how to keep going. I don’t have strong words tonight. I just need You to be near. Thank You that You are close to the brokenhearted, and that I don’t have to earn that. Carry what I can’t carry right now. Help me make it to the morning, where Your mercy is waiting again. Amen.

05 Questions people ask

Depression & faith, honestly answered.

Can a Christian be depressed?
Yes. Faithful people throughout the Bible experienced deep despair. Depression is not a sign that your faith has failed. It is a human experience that God meets with nearness, not judgment.
Does my depression mean my faith is failing?
No. Depression can have physical, mental, and circumstantial roots, not only spiritual ones. Feeling this way does not mean you are doing faith wrong. It means you are a human being carrying something heavy.
Where is God when I can’t feel Him at all?
Right beside you, even in the silence. Scripture promises He is close to the brokenhearted, and that promise does not depend on whether you can feel it in the moment. The absence of the feeling is not the absence of God.
What does the Bible say to someone who feels hopeless?
That you are not alone in it, that His mercies are new every single morning, and that the heaviness is not permanent even when it feels like it is. The Bible meets hopelessness with presence and with the promise that morning comes.
Is it okay to take medication or see a therapist for depression as a Christian?
Yes. Getting help is not a lack of faith. God works through doctors, counselors, and medicine, and reaching out for support can be part of how He carries you through this.
What do I do when even praying feels impossible?
You don’t need full sentences. A single honest word, or even just sitting in silence in His presence, is enough. Scripture says the Spirit prays on your behalf when you have nothing left to give.
